History

Black Tourmaline was used by many different ancient cultures and was believed to posses protective powers. Shamans used it during rituals and when scrying as a form of protection. Before the 15th century it was known as Schorl, named after a German village that was close to the tin mine wear it was found, until it was discovered to be a form of Tourmaline. 

Geology 

Black Tourmaline is a part of the Tourmaline mineral family, which are crystalline boron silicate minerals. It consists of magnesium, iron and other metals, which results in its black colouring. Black Tourmaline is the most abundant of all Tourmalines and has a hardness of 7 and can be found on every continent around the world.
