Rhodonite

History

Rhodonite is a primarily pink stone, named after the Greek word 'rhodon' meaning rose, due to its rose like colour. It was first discovered in the 1790's in Russia and often used as decorative objects throughout the middle ages. 

Geology

Rhodonite is a silicate mineral found in manganese ores. It is can be found in Russia, Australia, Canada, Peru, South Africa, Mexico and Japan. It rates a 5.5-6.5 on the harness scale and regularly found along with rhodochrosite. It often has black veins running through it caused from the metamorphism of other manganese minerals.
